Witchery - Don't Fear The Reaper
Once in every while, you'll ask for an album of a particular band, because you've heard
their former material and thought that it was quite good. Sometimes you're expections are
exceeded and sometimes not. In this case, everyone (Aardschok, Terrorizer) seems to be stoked about this album, but I simply do not get it even if I do recognize the
quality that's present.
We're talking about Witchery's latest, 'Don't fear the reaper' an album that has been about 3 years in the making, mostly because of the various members' other bands. (The Haunted, Mercyful Fate, Arch Enemy, Bloodbath/Opeth) Yes, we're talking about an all star band here, with Sharlee D'Angelo on bass, Martin Axenrot on drums, Jensen on guitar and members of pre-Witchery incarnation Satanic Slaughter of which a cover song
is present on this album.
So what does it sound like? At it's worst a weak take on The Haunted (the guitar sound and chuggah thrash riffs are EXACTLY the same as their last album) and at it's best a fierce rerun of better days from the past. Their Satanic Slaughter cover is arguably the best song on the album, being a breakneck black thrash song which really does the trick.
Not that the rest is bad, there are some some really fine Emperor and even Opthalamia resembling echoes present in the more melodic parts, and being written and played by these certain members, you can't really expect a bad song either. It's just that it sounds a
little uninspired and too reminiscent of their other bands (especially The Haunted) at times.
Maybe I'm just whining, expecting a little more after all these years, but this just doesn't cut it for me gentlemen. So in short: Good musicians, well written, bit much of The Haunted, a tad uninspired. Fans of modern blackened thrash should try it anyway.
Maybe there's more for you to find.
